A leader's perspective...
In Ecuador, I straddled the red line marking the Equator, one foot in the northern hemisphere, one foot in the south – this beautiful Andean nation is truly the centre of the world! Everywhere I looked the landscape was scattered with active volcanoes and a hive of thermal areas. To fully experience the therapeutic benefits of the volcanic hot pools, scrape up the mud from the bottom of the pool and cover yourself. The weekends are full of colourful markets in Otavalo where local Quechua dressed in traditional clothing come to town to trade their wares. Make sure you´re up early (and learn a few words of Spanish) as it will get you a long way ahead with bargaining and ensure the best price of the day!

real life experiences...
Arepas con queso y chocolate
Nestled alongside the Panamerican Highway headed north towards Ibarra, the cozy 'arepa hut' grills thick greasy corn arepas (a tortilla-pancake originated in Colombia) in an enormous stone oven and serves them hot with melted cheese. Savour one or two with a mug of hot chocolate if you have 15 minutes to spare, especially if the weather is cool or grey. The small dining area with wood benches and tables escapes even some locals and mine is probably the only foreigner's face to have been spotted there. To enjoy this delicious Ecuadorian snack, keep an eye out for the large cement domed oven on the east side of the highway and yell to the bus driver, "Para por favor!"
Chilling out in hammock land
Boasting more hammocks per capita than any other place in Ecuador, Canoa urges yu to relax. There's a hotel that offers savoury meals, awesome ambient music, clean and comfortable rooms and a sandy courtyard hung with hammocks. Swim, surf and sun on the clean eco-beach and even assist the locals in their efforts to keep the beach rubbish-free by picking up trash (if you find any). Fill a garbage bag and the Bambu will give you a cocktail on the house. The chilled-out vibe of the tiny village has been known to cause many a traveller to extend a few days stay into a week, especially after the adventure required to arrive at this 'hidden paradise'.
