amani children's home
Amani Children's Home is a small non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that runs a residential home for orphans and street-children at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. "Amani" is the Swahili word for peace. This word has been chosen because it characterizes their vision - to see each child flourish in an environment of peace and stability.
Due to one of the world's poorest economies, weakening family ties, and HIV/AIDS, the problem of street-children in Tanzania is growing daily. Amani opened its doors in 2001 with the commitment to reducing the number of children living on the streets by aiming to reunite them with relatives, equipping their families with the tools they need to be self-sustainable or by providing a safe place for homeless children to grow in mind, body, and spirit.
In 2004 Guerba raised the idea of building a new home for the children as the existing building was a rented house with no security of tenure and designed for a maximum of 8 people. There were over 60 children in this building, sleeping 30 to a room. In early 2005 a plot of land was purchased for the new home and the first Amani Kilimanjaro fully sponsored challenge went ahead in September 2005 to raise funds for the Home. With it's great success, the climb has become an annual event. The total raised by Guerba so far is over £200,000.
