Our online edition of articles from our weekly Intrepid Express newsletter

it's easy being green with our weekly tips

Climate change is one of the most urgent problems of our time, so making a personal commitment to reduce your 'carbon footprint' is a big step in the right direction to achieving a healthier environment.

Intrepid is aware that as a travel company we create and promote holidays that contribute to global warming - that is why we are passionate about our pledge to become a carbon neutral company by the end of 2010.

There are simple lifestyle changes each of us can make to ensure we leave a healthier planet for future generations and our Intrepid Express newsletter brings you a living green tip every week!...

last 12 tips...

188 - get to work
Ask your employer to set up a carpool or liftshare scheme. It's a great way that companies can make it easier for people to reduce their carbon footprint!

187 - beauty can be a waste
Supermarkets are forcing farmers to supply perfect produce, which results in fruit and vegetables being thrown out. Let your local supplier or greengrocer know that you're happy to buy the less-than-perfect left overs.

186 - let the sunshine in
In only 2 minutes the sun provides our planet with more energy than we all use in a year. Solar panels require daylight, not even direct sun, so now's the time to consider switching to a renewable energy.

185 - cyberspace supermarket
If you normally drive to the supermarket, then buying online can be a greener alternative if you don't request next-day delivery (so they don't make a special trip just for you) and even better if you combine your shopping with a friend! According to How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint by Joanna Yarrow, "One delivery round by a supermarket van can remove the need for 20 separate car journeys to the supermarket."

184 - wear, wash and leave
"I take older clothes with me, then I wash and leave in each town. By the end of the trip I have an empty backpack, feel great, and have room to bring back local crafts (which helps the locals too)." From Alice Kalambokas

183 - take the sting out
"Try to use as little as possible chemical mosquito repellents. Don't use in prevention without thinking first. See from places to places, from day to day if it's worth using mosquito repellent." From Binh An Vu Van

182 - join a car club
A car club lets you book a car when you need it, which saves you vehicle-associated expenses and reduces your carbon footprint. It's cheaper than renting a car and locations are often more convenient.

181 - food festivities
Celebrate seasonal food by going to local food fairs and farmers markets. Buying in season benefits the environment and your food tastes better!

180 - picture perfect holidays
"Email or post travel photos on networking sites to share with your loved ones and friends. Don't print them." Madonna de Luna

179 - leave a WED legacy
World Environment Day was 5 June, but you can still take a stand. For every activity registered on the WED2010 website, $10 goes towards gorilla conservation in Rwanda.

178 - throw in the towel
"Pack a small chamois-like washer to use instead of towels. They dry just as well as a fluffy towel but without the environmental laundry costs." From Kaye.

177 - one good thing turns into 3
"I walk more instead of taking a cab. Three things in return: Good exercise, I get to know the culture, I see better the beauty of the place." From Madonna de Luna.

176 - take charge
"Get a hand charger for your electronics - and you will not have to worry about plugging it in to strange sockets." From Melissa, Intrepid traveller.
